1 Early Indigenous Inhabitants
Long before European ships reached the Caribbean, the eastern portion of Roatán was inhabited by indigenous Pech (Paya) peoples. They utilized the island's abundant natural resources, navigating the sheltered mangrove waterways for fishing, trading, and collecting shellfish.
2 The Golden Age of Pirates & Port Royal
During the 17th century, the deep natural harbors and concealed mangrove channels of East End Roatán became a legendary haven for buccaneers and privateers. Port Royal served as a strategic military base and shelter for famous pirates, including Henry Morgan and John Coxon. The protected inlets allowed pirate fleets to lay in wait and ambush passing Spanish treasure galleons.
3 Anglo-Caribbean Settlement & Caymanian Migration
Following periods of British administration in the 18th and 19th centuries, families from the Cayman Islands and other Caribbean territories began migrating to the East End. Settlers established communities in Oak Ridge, Jonesville, and surrounding bays, building homes over the water and creating thriving coconut, fishing, and boatbuilding industries.
4 Official Creation of the Municipality (1960)
As the island evolved under Honduran sovereignty, the Eastern District formally separated from Roatán's western municipality. On March 6, 1960, the municipality was officially established and named **Jose Santos Guardiola** in honor of Brigadier General José Santos Guardiola, the President of Honduras who officially signed the Wyke-Cruz Treaty of 1859, incorporating the Bay Islands into the Republic of Honduras.
5 Santos Guardiola Today
Oak Ridge serves as the municipal seat of Santos Guardiola, surrounded by unique communities like Jonesville, Punta Gorda, Politilly Bight, Diamond Rock, and Camp Bay. Today, the municipality remains the agricultural, fishing, and cultural heartbeat of Roatán, offering visitors a preserved look at true island history and traditional Caribbean living.
